Saturday morning in Cumming starts with one of the community’s simplest local pleasures: a walk through the Cumming Farmers Market.

The market returns to Cumming City Center on October 3 from 8 to 11 a.m., bringing local food, plants and handmade goods together for a three-hour morning market.

Vendors are expected to offer farm-fresh produce along with locally raised meats, eggs and honey.

Shoppers can also look for homemade breads, desserts, jams and jellies, giving the market plenty of options beyond the produce table.

Potted plants and handmade arts and crafts add another layer for visitors who come to browse rather than fill a grocery bag.

The market will be set up in the Vision Parkway parking lot at Cumming City Center, positioned to the left as visitors enter that area.

For families, couples and weekend walkers, the setting makes the market an easy first stop before spending more time around the City Center.

Early arrival has its advantages, particularly for shoppers who want cooler morning temperatures and the first look at what vendors have brought that day.

Farmers markets also offer something conventional grocery trips usually cannot: a chance to slow down, talk directly with sellers and discover what is actually available locally right now.

That seasonal element means the mix can change from week to week, which is part of the reason repeat visits feel different.

Saturday’s market is also well timed for anyone planning a full day in Cumming.

The market wraps at 11 a.m., leaving plenty of time for lunch, shopping or other activities before the Dave Matthews Tribute Band performs at Lou Sobh Amphitheater Saturday evening.

In other words, City Center can anchor both ends of the day, beginning with local growers and makers in the morning and shifting to live music after sunset.

Residents looking for a low-key outing do not need to turn the visit into a major production.

A coffee, a reusable bag and an hour to browse may be all it takes to find fresh food or a locally made item worth bringing home.

The broader value is local as well, because buying directly from farmers, food producers and makers keeps more weekend spending connected to the people doing business in the area.

The Cumming Farmers Market runs Saturday, October 3, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Cumming City Center’s Vision Parkway parking area.
